Afghanistan is in darkness because the Taliban do not pay electricity bills

(Dan Tri) – The capital Kabul and a number of other Afghan provinces have experienced widespread power outages in recent days when the Taliban government cannot pay electricity bills because of financial exhaustion.

Sputnik reported that in recent days, the capital Kabul and some provinces of Afghanistan continued to lose power.

According to Afghanistan’s state energy agency (DABS), currently, only about a third of the Central Asian country has access to electricity.

Afghanistan imports about 80% to meet electricity consumption needs in neighboring countries such as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

The Taliban took control of Afghanistan in mid-August this year and also took over the national electricity company and its debt.

DABS currently plans to sell off assets to pay off nearly $62 million in debt to electricity suppliers in Central Asia.

Previously, former DABS director Daud Noorzai said Kabul could be completely cut off in winter if the Taliban government cannot pay its debt.

The Taliban took control of Afghanistan in the face of many challenges.

In addition, the Taliban’s return to power caused many countries to temporarily suspend aid to Afghanistan.
