The baby was infected with 51,000 times more nCoV

Among more than 2,000 children treated for Covid-19 at the National Children’s Hospital, there was one abnormal newborn.

When the disease was first detected, this newborn’s viral load was 51,418 times higher than the average of other pediatric patients.

Nurses care for newborns at Diaconesses Hospital in Paris on November 17, 2020.

Scientists say the new variant carries a protein spike that could make it more infectious.

`It could be a coincidence. But the connection is quite clear. The fact that a patient has an exponentially larger amount of virus and the variant infection results are related,` Roberta DeBiasi, Head of the Department

Jeremy Luban, a virologist at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, said the increased viral load in the baby was surprising and noteworthy.

According to US data, children are at low risk of serious illness when infected with Covid-19.

Currently, about 270 children in the US have died from Covid-19 while more than 500,000 adults in this country have died.

Harvard University researcher Adrienne Randolph, head of an international research group on children and nCoV, said that in the early days of the pandemic, fewer children were infected so they were not prioritized for gene sequencing.

As the world enters a new phase of the pandemic, nCoV is changing in significant ways.

Recently, American scientists discovered the latest variant of nCoV, B.1.526, which first appeared in New York in November 2020.
